"EasyJet is in the process of contacting the relevant customers directly and affected customers will be notified no later than 26th of May".

British Airways, which was hit in 2018 with the theft of hundreds of thousands of credit card details, is still appealing against a fine from the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) of 183.4 million pounds ($343.2 million).

It said that "Action has already been taken to contact all of these customers and they have been offered support".

The company said it had engaged leading forensic experts to investigate the issue.

In a statement released today, the company admitted that "highly sophisticated" hackers had breached its systems, accessing email addresses and travel details held by the organisation.

An NCSC spokesman said: "We are aware of this incident and have been working with EasyJet from the outset to understand how it has affected people in the United Kingdom".

EasyJet confirmed that apart from those 2,208 people, the credit card and passport details of everyone else wasn't accessed.

The airline is asking clients to remain vigilant, especially if they receive unsolicited requests for data verification or other information as they could be the target of phishing emails.

"We are advising customers to be cautious of any communications purporting to come from EasyJet or EasyJet Holidays". "However, this is an evolving threat as cyber attackers get ever more sophisticated", says EasyJet Chief Executive Officer Johan Lundgren.

EasyJet said it is working with the National Cyber Security Centre and the Information Commissioner's Office, which is the United Kingdom data regulator.

Easyjet has been going through a torrid time, with the novel coronavirus forcing it to shut down flying operations completely as of 16 April.

EasyJet did not immediately give details of how the breach occurred, but said it had "closed off this unauthorised access" and reported the incident to the authorities.

Adding to its woes, the airline is in a dispute with its founder and largest shareholder, Stelios Haji-Ioannou, over a £4.5 billion plane order.
