Joe Rogan's podcast goes exclusive to Spotify in a reported $100m deal

Though the move makes the Joe Rogan Experience exclusive to Spotify by the end of 2020, Rogan retains ownership and editorial control.

Shortly after the news dropped, the chief executive of a major podcast company texted me, "Game, set, match".

Rogan is unique in the podcasting world: a comedian, a former kickboxer and Taekwondo champion, his guests run the gamut from mixed martial artists to entrepreneurs, scientists, athletes and health advocates to celebrity actors. Then "somewhere around the end of the year", the streaming service will become the podcast's exclusive home.

In addition to the wildly popular podcast format, JRE also produces corresponding video episodes, which will also be available on Spotify as in-app vodcasts. (Exactly when the exclusivity doesn't appear to be specified.) Secondly, the exclusivity applies to both the audio and video components of the show. I am not going to be an employee of Spotify. "And having shows they want and can't find anywhere else is only going to help us gain more [users]".

What about people who can't get Spotify?

"We're very excited to begin this new chapter of the JRE and we hope you're there when we cross over".

"Announcement: the podcast is moving to Spotify!" They've acquired popular murder mystery podcasts as well as The Joe Budden Podcast, which is now their #1 podcast. This is the second massive deal the company has made in the space earlier this year, as they also shelled out $155 million for Bill Simmons' The Ringer.

Rogan started his podcast over 11 years ago and has grown the show into one of the most popular and successful podcasts in the world.

He went on to stress that nothing will change and the show will remain free.

However, things will change for those living in countries in which Spotify is not available. But, as more details are released, Middle Easy will update the deal.
