He described it as the "biggest step" the California-based internet giant has taken yet "to enable commerce across our family of apps".

Instagram Shops will help you create categories for the products on sale and highlight the products you want.

The new feature allows businesses to set up a single store across Facebook and Instagram for free. The platform can set up a store automatically even if the user had put up only the product catalogue, he added. This new tool can provide some impetus to those struggling ones to stay afloat, Zuckerberg said.

Company leaders wager that making the platforms more business-friendly will generate fresh ad revenue, even as user growth slows. "They are not going to undo all of the economic damage that has been caused by COVID but I hope that we can at least help build some of the infrastructure that businesses need not only in this moment but going forward as well", he added. "Ultimately, it will be up to companies to decide what they want to use and what level of integration they want", he said.

Both Facebook and Instagram already supported a degree of e-commerce - for example, Facebook has its Marketplace and will likely make a bigger push through its Libra cryptocurrency initiative, while Instagram allows users to buy products featured in posts and ads. Facebook might have its Marketplace offering but that feature severely trails similar programs from other companies.

The company also noted that it is now testing a new feature for both Facebook and Instagram that will allow sellers, brands and creators to tag products from their Facebook Shop or catalogue before going live and those products will be shown at the bottom of the video so people can easily tap to learn more and purchase.

Any seller, no matter their size or budget, can bring their business online and connect with customers wherever and whenever it's convenient for them.

The Shops feature is being introduced in the United States from Tuesday and will be available on Instagram in the next few weeks.

We want to give people a place to experience the joy of shopping versus the chore of buying. People can then tap to learn more or purchase. But the company's new tools go further, enabling businesses to create a full-fledged Facebook Shop. She simply needs to pin a product link in the Instagram Live and the stock will be off the shelf in minutes - especially since Facebook integrates a checkout feature in its apps. People can automatically browse their entire catalog, save products, and place an order. So, with Shops, it's helping more local businesses come online.

"This isn't going to make up for all of the lost business", said Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook.
