Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi praised the well-established and long-standing relations with Africa, saying that his country will work to implement the G20 initiative on debt service suspension, which in turn could help ease the debt burden on African countries.

The tensions border around trade, human rights and a range of other issues.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has called the proposal "a death knell for the high degree of autonomy" that Beijing promised the former British colony when it was returned to China in 1997.

"Regretfully, in addition to the raging coronavirus, a political virus is also spreading in the U.S".

Both superpowers must find a way to coexist peacefully despite their differences, he said, noting: "It's also true that we have many disagreements but that doesn't preclude cooperation".

Lately, the USA has been accusing China of doing less to contain the novel coronavirus that emerged in China's Hubei province in December a year ago and has since rapidly spread across the world.

Wang said China has no intention to either change or replace the US, and that the USA should abandon its "wishful thinking of changing China and stopping 1.4 billion people in their historic march toward modernization".

"Both China and the USA stand to gain from cooperation and lose from confrontation".

New Zealand sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire and is sometimes called the Shaky Isles for its frequent quakes. Train services in Wellington were suspended, as engineers inspected tracks for damage.

Meanwhile, consultations on the COC in the South China Sea are also accelerating and advancing in an orderly manner, Wang said, adding that the second reading of the draft negotiating text of the COC has been launched.

Trump, who has accused the agency of being "China centric", has threatened to permanently halt funding to the World Health Organization and to reconsider his country's membership of the agency.

Wang told reporters on Sunday that China has provided emergency aid to help contain the coronavirus pandemic to almost 150 countries and four global organizations.

"Reunification between the two sides of the Strait is an inevitable trend of history, no one and no force can stop it", Wang said.

"China is open to working with the global scientific community to look into the source of the virus", Wang said.

What are the accusations against China?

Last month, Missouri became the first USA state to sue the Chinese government over its handling of the coronavirus, saying China's response to the outbreak that originated in the city of Wuhan brought devastating economic losses to the state.

Wang Yanyi said the centre had "isolated and obtained some coronaviruses from bats" but stressed that these were sufficiently different to Covid-19.
