Actor Richard Herd, Mr. Wilhelm on 'Seinfeld,' Dead at 87

The Boston native broke into show business as a stage actor in NY.

Herd was never a household name, but over the course of almost five decades of screen acting he became a recognizable face, bringing his commanding presence and versatile talents to dozens of film and TV credits, including classic films and legendary sci-fi franchises. In 1974, the death of actor Richard Long led to Herd being called up to replace him in the now-classic drama All the President's Men, and the rest of the 1970s were quite busy for him.

His film credits include "All the President's Men", "Hercules in NY", "I Never Promised You a Rose Garden", "F.I.S.T.", "The China Syndrome", "The Onion Field" and Jordan Peele's 2017 horror-thriller "Get Out". He made his film debut in 1970's Hercules in NY. (1979), The Onion Field (1979), Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987) and Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1997).

Herd also had a roles on "Star Trek: The Next Generation", "Star Trek: Voyager" and "Star Trek: Renegades".

The cast of T.J Hooker: Adrian Zmed, William Shatner, Richard Herd and Heather Locklear. He appeared in 11 episodes of "Seinfeld" as Mr. Wilhem, George Costanza's demanding boss at the New York Yankees.

In 2005, Herd, who had served on the Screen Actors Guild board of directors, offered a workshop on auditioning during an appearance in Springfield.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Patricia Herd, and his two children Erica and Richard Herd Jr.
