Blashill's record in five seasons in Detroit is 153-194-52.

The Red Wings' four-year postseason drought is their longest since a five-year run without a shot to win the Cup from 1979-83.

The NHL abandoned the rest of the regular season on Tuesday because of the coronavirus pandemic.

NEWARK, NJ - DECEMBER 27: Detroit Red Wings head coach Jeff Blashill instructs players during the third period against the New Jersey Devils at the Prudential Center on December 27, 2017 in Newark, New Sweater.

But Blashill took over a team in decline, lost center Pavel Datsyuk when he went home to Russian Federation in 2016 and lost center Henrik Zetterberg when he stopped playing because of back problems in 2018. "I have no plans of making a coaching change at this time". Yzerman, who became Red Wings GM on April 19, 2019, said he did not expect to compete for a playoff spot this season. "We need to improve the team".

"It certainly means a lot", Blashill said. But he praised his staff, pointing out assistant Dan Bylsma won the Stanley Cup as coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2009 and assistant Doug Houda won the Cup as an assistant with the Boston Bruins in 2011.

"I think it's been a hard position in his tenure here". "I don't think I was at the Combine his draft year, when he was selected by the Red Wings, so I didn't get to meet him then".

"Blash is a great coach", the 23-year-old Larkin said of the only head coach he's known in five years in the National Hockey League.

Steve Yzerman plans to name next Red Wings captain before 2020-21 season

The Red Wings will have a captain for the first time since 2018.

"With the way we've played at times, it is unfair to judge", Larkin said. I want to do everything we can to make sure that we're as ready as individuals and a team for next season.

"But you know what?" Obviously, I knew the player very well as an opponent and as a prospect watching him through his time at MI and the [NTDP] and him playing for the Red Wings when I was in Tampa. "I don't really want to talk a whole lot about it, because he's the coach, and I'm a player, and at the end of the day, I have no say".

"I'm very impressed with him". He worked us extremely hard, as he should have.

"The plan is to name a captain, prior to the start of the next season", Yzerman said.

Yzerman emphasized that the Red Wings' primary problem is roster construction as opposed to who's behind the bench.

"We'll see what the parameters are in place from the National Hockey League and Players Association and ultimately our guys are going to have to do everything they can to try to find ways, even if you don't have as many skaters as you'd like, playing three-on-three in tight areas and things like that to get themselves as ready for next season as possible".

Pharma chiefs see coronavirus vaccine by year-end, but challenges 'daunting'
How quickly those studies can determine whether the vaccines are safe and effective depends in part on how widely the coronavirus is still spreading.
