The officer arrested was Derek Chauvin, the policeman seen on a bystander's video kneeling on Floyd, according to local media reports.

Chants of "I can't breathe" - the words spoken by Floyd when he was pinned to the ground - echoed through the streets as similar protests were seen in Denver, Louisville, Los Angeles and other cities across the United States.

Pleading the fifth amendment prohibits defendants from self-incrimination and double jeopardy as well as mandates due process of law, meaning fair treatment through the judicial system.

The former San Francisco 49ers quarterback, who was essentially driven from the National Football League for protesting deaths just like Floyd's, tweeted Friday that he has started a legal defense fund to help people who have been arrested for protesting in Minneapolis.
