Roger Federer is the world's highest-paid athlete, says Forbes

The owner of a men's-record 20 Grand Slam singles titles made US$6.3 million of that haul from tennis prize money, with the rest from endorsements and appearances fees, according to Forbes. Another plunge is expected next year from the shutdown.

Cristiano Ronaldo (£85m (FJ$209m)), Messi (£84m (FJ$206m)) and Neymar (£77.5m (FJ$190m)) come next, while American basketball player LeBron James (£71.5m (FJ$176m)) completes the top five.

Brazilian footballer Neymar was fourth overall on $95.5 million, $25 million from endorsements, while National Basketball Association star LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers was fifth on $88.2 million, $60 million of that from endorsements.

Tiger Woods is in the top 10 at No. 8, having taken home $60 million in endorsement deals and $2.3 million in winnings. A pair of unlikely, underwhelming National Football League quarterbacks completed the top 10, with Minnesota's Kirk Cousins earning $60.5 million and Philadelphia's Carson Wentz taking in $59.1 million. The NBA has the most players on the list of any sport with 34, followed by the National Football League with 31, which is up from 19 past year. MLB, which has yet to begin play in 2020 due to COVID-19, had only one player qualify (Clayton Kershaw, $27.3 million) after placing 15 the previous year.

Spanish footballer Carlos Ramos, the Real Madrid captain, was last among the 100 on $21.8 million, including $3 million in endorsements.

Japanese tennis player Naomi Osaka was revealed to be the highest paid female athlete earlier this month. That's the first time two women have appeared in the top 100 in the same year since 2016, when both Williams and Maria Sharapova were featured.

Federer famously parted ways with Nike in 2018 and subsequently signed a deal with Uniqlo that pays him $30 million per year.
