As protests, looting and violence spread across Los Angeles Saturday evening, Mayor Eric Garcetti asked Gov.

"If you love the city, go home", the mayor proclaimed upon announcing the city's curfew, which was apparently to no avail, as Garcetti later called on California governor Gavin Newsom for help from the state's National Guard.

"We can not fulfill our duty to protect life when people are looting", Garcetti said earlier in the day, after offering remarks about the horror of Floyd's death.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn said she lived through two previous seminal LA race riots - Watts in 1965 and 1992 following the acquittal of police officers in the beating of black motorist Rodney King - and remembers the pain the city endured.

Garcetti extended the curfew across the entire city of LA, with an exemption for people traveling between work, people seeking emergency medical care and emergency responders, according to several tweets from Garcetti.

The curfew will be in effect from 8:00 PM through 5:00 AM in downtown L.A. The areas affected are between the 110 Freeway on the west, the 10 Freeway on the south, the 101 Freeway on the north and Alameda on the east. Previously the curfew only applied to the Downtown LA area.

In Sacramento, nine police officers sustained minor injuries at a protest that drew about 500 people.

On Saturday, a mostly peaceful demonstration early in the day devolved in the afternoon when protesters set several Police Department cars on fire, broke store windows and climbed on top of a bus.

The protests started after George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, died while under police custody in Minneapolis.

In Philadelphia, NBC News and KYW-TV report said 13 police officers were injured during confrontations with demonstrators. Floyd was pronounced dead an hour later at the Hennepin County Medical Center. Video footage shows Floyd repeatedly telling the police officer that he could not breathe.
