Former boxing champion turned promoter Floyd Mayweather has pledged to cover George Floyd's funeral and memorial service costs.

The 43-year-old Mayweather chose to offer after learning that Anzel Jennings, CEO of the TMT music label, grew up with George in Houston.

"He'll probably get mad at me for saying that, but yes, [Mayweather] is definitely paying for the funeral", Ellerbe said. Mayweather personally has been in touch with the family, according to Leonard Ellerbe, the CEO of Mayweather Promotions.

The former five-division world champion's promotional company, Mayweather Productions, confirmed on Twitter that he had made the offer, and several local media reports have said the family have accepted.

Floyd, 46, died May 25 in Minneapolis after he was arrested there, for allegedly using a counterfeit $20 bill to purchase cigarettes in a store.

George Floyd was killed in broad daylight by a Minneapolis police officer by the name of Derek Chauvin last week. Floyd, who was handcuffed, became unresponsive after nearly three minutes.

Chauvin has been charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.

"The most recent killing, involving George Floyd, is yet another tragic example of the discrimination that African-Americans face each day".

Floyd's death has sparked protests and riots countrywide, with demonstrators calling for an end to police brutality against black communities, and for charges to be brought against the three other officers involved in his death.
