The phenomenon, also known as a penumbral eclipse, occurs when the earth, sun and moon are all aligned.

During a total eclipse, the Moon passes through the darkest region of Earth's shadow, the umbra. During the lunar eclipse, Earth moves in between the sun and the moon and obstruct the sunlight that is reflected by the moon.

This full moon's peak is 3:12 p.m Eastern Daylight Time on June 5. People in India can witness the lunar eclipse at 11.15 pm.

Friday marks the strawberry moon. "Thus, some fraction of the Sun's direct rays continues to reach the most deeply eclipsed parts of the Moon during a penumbral eclipse".

The June full moon also has been called the full honey moon, mead moon and rose moon.

Rather than color, the naming of the strawberry moon is a nod to our agricultural seasons, from the early Native Americans who named it.

The next two lunar eclipses will be visible on July 4-5 and November 29-30.

Most people believe that during a lunar eclipse a simple cut will not heal properly and a scar will be left forever.

'It'll be very obvious you don't need anything special to see it'.
