Game Gear Micro Announced by SEGA

To mark the company's 60th anniversary, Sega has made a decision to take one of its most notorious systems and re-release it in micro form.

The only problem? The steep price tag, a drought of decent games and the requirement of having to drag a sack of AA batteries with you at all times to keep this thirsty beast fed, saw the Game Gear fizzle out by the mid-90s. A teaser website is now open, letting people know a full reveal is coming at at 12am ET/4am UTC/1pm JST on June 3, 2020 as part of the Sega 60th anniversary. Where the Mega Drive Mini came with 42 games, each Game Gear Micro only comes with four, each colour having a different set. Even with all of its hang-ups, the Game Gear was still a relative success for SEGA with many millions of units sold, but it could never topple Nintendo from their lofty perch of handheld domination once they introduced the Game Boy Colour and then secured their throne with the Game Boy Advance in the 2000s. If you're a Sega fan, you're going to want to grab them all because they each contain four different games.

The Blue model includes Sonic Chaos, Gunstar Heroes, Sylvan Tale and Baku Baku Animal. The yellow edition features Nazo Puyo, Shining Force, Shining Force II, and Shining Force: Final Conflict, while the red edition gets Megami Tensei Gaiden: Last Bible, Megami Tensei Gaiden: Last Bible Special, G.G. Shinobi, and Columns. For comparison, the Game Boy Micro used a 2-inch display.

As for pricing, Sega is charging $50 for each one.

The portable portable measures just over three inches in length and a little over 1.5 inches in width, with a 1.15 inch display. As much as this feels like a console created to appeal to Game Gear fans, Sega's approach feels a little cash-grabby as all 16 games could have easily been included on a single console.
