Minister, Buhari’s Aide, others react as Majek Fashek dies in NY

His death was confirmed by his manager, Omenka Uzoma, on the late singer's official Instagram page. He died in their company, " Uzoma said.

Nigerian celebrities have taken to their social media platforms to mourn the death of Music Legend, Majekodunmi Fasheke, a.k.a Majek Fashek.

"He's done a lot for Nigeria and Africa", his manager said.

In the early eighties Fashek, who at the time went by the stage name Rajesh Kanal, joined the group Jastix. He described Fashek as a maverick musician who took the world by storm with his "enigmatic talent". His musical style resembled Bob Marley, one of the pioneers of reggae music, who had a great influence on Fashek.

Majek Fashek had been ill for some time but the cause of his death is not clear.

Majek Fashek was born in Benin City to an Edo mother and an Ijesha father but identifies with his Benin roots more.

"I'm not gonna die until my music reaches the ends of the earth", the African singer told his close associate and former record label owner Charles Novia in a private chat released on Tuesday.

The single "Send Down the Rain" became an anthem and won several awards including Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria's (PMAN) 'Song of the Year'.

Similar, Senator Shehu Sani in his reaction said, "some years ago I met Majek Fashek near a train station in NY before he returned to Nigeria, he was a shadow of the man many of us loved decades ago".
