At Google's 2018 I/O developer conference, the company debuted a new suite of "digital well-being" aimed at helping Android users better manage their screen time.

The company is still refreshing its well-being toolset, although Google I/O isn't taking place this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Indeed, even with the small chance of accidental crisis texts to companions, this appears to be a valuable safety measure. With the lockdown situation, there has been a rise in search queries related to "insomnia", and "can't sleep" for the months of April and May. You can also save a transcript directly to Google Docs for easy sharing. The addition of Grayscale helps fade the colors on your phone to black and white and reduce the chance of you staying up. You can choose to extend your bedtime but this will be logged in your Bedtime Mode. They can pair Bedtime mode with Digital Wellbeing to limit the interruptions during sleep.

This visual alarm system will begin 15 minutes prior to your audio alarm. The Clock app now gets a new Bedtime tab that lets you set daily sleep and wake times. Setting bedtime schedules and adjusting it from your app for everyone in the Family Link.

The updated Bedtime experience is launching first on Pixel devices starting today, and will roll out to the Clock app and on other Android devices later this summer. I love a software update that promises better battery life, so I'll be keeping my eyes on my Pixel 4 XL to see if it can last me longer during the day.

The Personal Safety app was previously only available on the Pixel 4, but it's now rolling out to all Pixel devices.

For example if you're about to go on a run or hike alone, safety check will make sure you made it back safely. If you need immediate help or are in a risky situation, emergency sharing also gives those contacts your real-time location so they can find you.
