A German man has been identified by United Kingdom police as a suspect in the disappearance of British toddler Madeleine McCann, who made headlines around the world when she vanished from the Portuguese resort 13 years ago.

He is believed to have had access to two vehicles that could be in some way connected to the disappearance of McCann, who was 3-years-old at the time of the incident.

The man, who is in prison on an unrelated matter, had been in the Algarve between 1995 and 2007, with short spells in Germany during that time.

Madeleine was 3 when she vanished from a holiday flat at Praia da Luz, Portugal, on May 3, 2007, while her parents ate with friends at a nearby tapas restaurant.

According to The UK Sun, the suspect is linked to both the camper and a Jaguar XJR6 with German plates seen in the vicinity of the crime in 2006 and 2007.

The detectives asked the public to come forward with any information on the vehicles and on two mobile phone numbers, one of which is believed to have been used by the suspect on the day of Madeleine's disappearance.

He was described as being white, with short blonde hair, possibly fair, and being of around six foot tall.

Joint investigations with Portuguese and German police have subsequently led to the suspect. "We will never give up hope of finding Madeleine alive but whatever the outcome may be, we need to know, as we need to find peace".

Det Chief Insp Cranwell appealed to anyone who knew the suspect and who may have information in relation to Madeleine's case to come forward. "We are appealing to you".
