Statesboro JCPenney store to close

Additional closings are expected in coming weeks.

The JC Penney at Shoppes at Parma, one of the final remnants of the old Parmatown Mall, will close for good this summer.

Store-closing sales will start June 12 and will last 10-16 weeks.

Gainesville's J.C. Penney closed during the COVID-19 pandemic, and it remained closed even as other J.C. Penney stores, including the one at the Mall of Georgia in Buford, reopened.

The Savannah JCPenney is among the almost 500 locations that recently reopened after coronavirus orders shuttered them. To implement the financial restructuring plan, the Company filed voluntary petitions for reorganization under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code. The closings are a part of the company's store optimazation strategey and were announced today.

James Cash Penney opened his first store in Kemmerer, Wyoming, in 1902, and he proceeded to open stores in smaller farming and ranching towns and later in more urban downtowns. Assuming he signs off, going-out-of-business sales could begin immediately. Finally, the expansion into suburban malls in the 1970s and 1980s made J.C. Penney a coast-to-coast national department store chain.
