Democrats move convention to Wisconsin Center

Former US vice president Joe Biden would formally accept his Democratic presidential nomination at the party's scaled back convention in Wisconsin's Milwaukee city on August 20, organisers of the mega event have announced. The convention was scheduled to take place at the Fiserv Forum, the 17,000-seat home of the NBA's Milwaukee Bucks, but it will now be held in the Wisconsin Center, a convention center in downtown Milwaukee. He sought to draw a contrast with Trump's push for a traditional convention in North Carolina, clashing with the state's Democratic governor, Roy Cooper, and public health officials over the details amid the pandemic.

The DNCC said epidemiologist and infectious disease experts W. Ian Lipking and Larry Brilliant will help advise the committee on efforts to protect the health and safety of convention staff, attendees and Wisconsin residents.

In view of the coronavirus pandemic, the Democratic National Convention Committee (DNCC) on Wednesday announced its convention plan to broadcast from Milwaukee and across the nation to reach out to all Americans.

The precautions starkly contrast to the Republican National Convention, which is set for August 24-27 in Jacksonville, Florida. But Trump has said he plans to accept his nomination in Jacksonville, Florida, because Cooper wouldn't guarantee Republicans the ability to host a large-scale event in Charlotte's National Basketball Association arena.

Trump and the GOP's decision to move the RNC without substantial Covid-19 precautions to Florida has been criticized given the surge of cases in the panhandle state since May.

In Wisconsin, there are now over 25,000 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, and the death toll stands at 745.

He also said he can't imagine having large indoor rallies, such as the one Trump recently held in Tulsa, while coronavirus remains out of control. The chair presides over all official convention business.

"Vice President Biden intends to proudly accept his party's nomination in Milwaukee and take the next step forward towards making Donald Trump a one-term president", said Jen O'Malley Dillon, Campaign Manager, Biden for President.

The United States has more than 2.336 million confirmed cases of Covid-19 with more than 121,000 deaths since January 1, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
