Victoria calls in military to assist amid soaring cases

Mr Andrews said saliva testing would be rolled out for the first time in Victoria from Monday and would involve getting a saliva sample into a cup for testing.

His government is undertaking a testing blitz of 100,000 people across the Melbourne suburb hotspots, which are Keilor Downs, Broadmeadows, Albanvale, Maidstone, Sunshine West, Brunswick West, Hallam, Fawkner, Reservoir and Pakenham.

In Victoria, almost one in three people quarantined in hotels after returning from overseas are refusing tests, the state's deputy chief health officer said on Friday.

"We will. make sure that people understand before they come that this is a requirement".

The Premier said the massive boost to testing capacity was unprecedented.

Authorities are anxious that it means the state's official Covid-19 tally isn't accurate.

More than 1,000 military personnel are helping with the operation, while other states will help process the test results.

A modest amount of residents in Victoria's coronavirus hotspots have declined to undertake COVID-19 testing on now being doorknocked beneath the state's suburban blitz.

"We will have approximately 850 providing logistical support, and also providing quarantine support at hotels".

With the coronavirus resurgence in Australia's second most populous state of Victoria picking up pace, the country's Defense Minister Linda Reynolds announced that they are deploying 1000 additional defense officers to Melbourne to assist with the state's soaring new infections.

Currently, 30 people in hotel quarantine have the virus.

These areas are the Melbourne municipalities of Brimbank, Cardinia, Casey, Darebin, Hume and Moreland. It's more stringent than most other places'.

Australia has recorded roughly 7,500 coronavirus cases and 104 deaths in a population of 25 million, with several regions believed to be effectively virus-free.

Of the state's 20 new cases on Wednesday, nine were identified through routine testing, seven were linked to known outbreaks and one was a returned traveller in hotel quarantine.

13 cases remain under investigation.

There are 183 active cases in Victoria with six in hospital.

Since the spike in new cases, drive-through testing sites have experienced extremely high demand while panic buying has also returned, with Coles and Woolworths reinstating purchase limits.
