Mexico: 6 dead in powerful quake

An natural disaster measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale shook southern Mexico on Tuesday morning, setting off the alarm for authorities to warn residents of possible tsunami waves.

Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum also activated response protocols, adding that two people had been injured.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center sent an all-clear in the afternoon, saying the initial tsunami threat has now passed.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake's magnitude was 7.7, while Mexico's seismological institute put its strength at 7.5, according to Mexico President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. As many as 200 houses in the area were damaged, including 30 that were badly impacted, a local official said.

According to The Weather Channel, the Mexico-based quake hit Tuesday morning and clocked in at a magnitude of 7.4.

"The National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) and the Oaxaca Institute of Cultural Heritage state in their latest report that 55 objects of cultural heritage were damaged in Oaxaca, the epicentre of the quake", the ministry said in a statement.

Mexico's oil refinery in Salina Cruz, some 143 km from La Crucecita, briefly suspended operations as a precaution, and restarted again.

Location of a 7.4 magnitude natural disaster on the west coast of Mexico. In the past 35 years there were several powerful quakes in the southern and central parts of the country, which caused wide-scale destruction and heavy casualties.

Medical staff were evacuated from some hospitals in the capital alongside patients, although those suffering from the coronavirus remained isolated inside the buildings, alongside their caretakers.
