A United Nations rights investigator urged the European Union on Friday to consider measures to prevent or punish any Israeli annexation of parts of the occupied West Bank, a few days after over 1,000 European lawmakers made a similar call. The Committee for Justice and Peace in the Middle East had made an appeal earlier to protest at Place Clairefontaine.

The United Nations Security Council has said settlements violate global law.

Berkowitz arrived in Israel for talks with Israeli leaders, including Netanyahu and Ashkenazi.

The proposals envisage Israeli annexation of its West Bank settlements and the Jordan Valley, Palestinian territory occupied since 1967 and located around 50 kilometers from the enclave of Gaza.

Friday's statement by Michael Lynk, U.N. special rapporteur on human rights in the Palestinian territories, said the European Union should back up its warnings against Israeli plans with "a decisive menu of counter-measures".

The cooperation comes at a time of strong Arab opposition to Israel's plans to annex parts of the occupied West Bank - territory Palestinians seek for a state - under a USA peace plan.

The incident comes after Hamas warned that Israeli plans to annex settlements in the West Bank would be a "declaration of war on the Palestinian people", as the group's spokesman put it on Thursday. There was no confirmation of the report, which quoted an unnamed American official.

Abu Amer said that Hamas wants armed attacks against Israel in the West Bank instead, in order to spare the Gaza Strip.

The PA has already cancelled all agreements with Israel and the US. He also said cooperation with Israel on the pandemic would not affect the UAE's opposition to annexation.

They discussed the Trump plan and possible annexation steps.

The prospect of unilateral annexation has been condemned internationally, with European and Arab states, as well as senior members of the US Democratic Party, warning the Israeli government against doing so.
