With a record for cases seemingly set nearly daily across Florida, it's no surprise that the state established a new one-week high as the rampant grip of COVID-19 has exploded. Public health officials in California and throughout the nation have identified bars as the most risky non-essential businesses now open, the state said.

Consuming alcohol reduces inhibitions, which leads to less mask-wearing and social distancing, health officials warn. Bars are also generally noisy, requiring patrons to shout, which spreads droplets more widely.

State officials have said IL has been progressing faster than expected in meeting health metrics tied to reopening. More than 2.5 million people have tested positive for the new coronavirus in the United States and more than 125,000 have died, the most in the world.

For a third consecutive day on Saturday, the number of confirmed US cases leapt by more than 40,000, one of the largest surges in the world.

As Texas reported 6,000 more cases on June 25, Governor Greg Abbott put further restrictions on businesses after "pausing" the state's reopening earlier in the week.

On June 27, 12.40 percent of new cases** tested positive.

Even in states where cases have been declining for weeks, bars have been a source of outbreaks.

U.S. Vice President Pence on Sunday said the federal government would extend support for coronavirus testing in Texas as long as necessary amid a risky surge in new cases, after U.S. health officials had moved to curb some sites in various localities.

With Mr Trump struggling to get his re-election bid off the ground ahead of the November vote, the campaign confirmed that planned events featuring Vice President Mike Pence in Arizona and Florida next week had been postponed "out of an abundance of caution". On Sunday, Pence traveled to Texas and attended a service at the First Baptist Church of Dallas where a 100-member choir sang without masks. Pence has defended Trump's refusal to directly ask all Americans to wear masks. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said 87% of the singers were infected. The global death toll exceeded half a million in seven months, another grim marker.

IL public health officials on Sunday confirmed an additional 646 cases of the novel coronavirus with 15 deaths.
