Ex-Liverpool player stabbed and robbed in 'unprovoked' attack

Wisdom was attacked by a gang of four men armed with knives and wearing masks as he walked to his vehicle in the Beaumont Street area of Toxteth at around 4.30am.

His designer was watch was stolen by the gang.

The 27-year-old will not be available for Derby's Championship match against Preston North End at Deepdale on Wednesday night.

Derby County defender Andre Wisdom is in a "stable" condition after he was stabbed during an incident of robbery while visiting a relative at the weekend.

"He sustained injuries which resulted in him being admitted to hospital, where he is in a stable condition".

Wisdom continues to receive treatment for injuries as Merseyside Police investigate the stabbing.

Wisdom came through the ranks at Liverpool and was handed his first-team debut by Brendan Rodgers in 2012, before making a further 21 appearances for the Anfield club.

His sister is quoted as saying: "He's been stabbed and is in hospital".

Derby County fans have raised more than £4,000 towards a flag they hope to display at the Championship club's Pride Park ground.

Merseyside Police said Wisdom was walking in Beaumont Street in the Toxteth area of the city at about 04:30 BST when he was assaulted.

Albion tweeted their support for the defender, wishing him a speedy recovery.
