Ben Stokes to assume English Test Cricket captaincy

Watch the first Test between England and West Indies live on Sky Sports Cricket from 10.30am on Wednesday.

A statement from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) read: "England Test captain Joe Root will leave the training camp at the Ageas Bowl on Wednesday afternoon to be with his wife, Carrie, who is expecting their second child later this week".

With the series being held in a biosecure environment due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the 29-year-old will have to undergo a seven-day self-isolation period at home before joining the England squad ahead of the second Test at Old Trafford on July 13.

With Root heading north to join his family in Sheffield, Jos Buttler will captain the other in a game that sees 27 of the country's best red-ball players go head to head.

Stokes, the hero of England's World Cup victory, was appointed as captain for the primary Test match on Tuesday instead of Joe Root.

"I'm delighted with today, it was a great opportunity to get out there against the new ball, and show them what I've got", said Bracey.

Stokes has been preparing for this moment ever since the schedule confirmed a likely clash for Root, and declared earlier this week that he plans to be an attacking captain - in keeping with his all-action style on the field. "He is a talisman, he leads from the front anyway", said Silverwood.

"He has a good cricket brain and, even though he does not have much captaincy experience, he will have seasoned players like James Anderson and Stuart Broad around to bounce ideas off", Wood wrote in a column for BBC. So I think, it's been a good week's prep and that put me in a good place to tackle today.

"He's been Rooty's right-hand man for a while now". Burns is England's first choice opener while Sibley, Crawley and Denly have credit in the bank from helping England to their 3-1 series victory in South Africa at the start of the year. I will extend him the same courtesies I do Rooty.

Opposing skipper Jos Buttler (24no) was at the crease with Sam Curran (15no) at the end of the day's 90 overs.
