Jeffrey Epstein's longtime confidant and former girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell was arrested Thursday and is facing multiple sex abuse charges stemming from an alleged sex trafficking conspiracy involving underage girls.

Federal Bureau of Investigation agents detained the daughter of late newspaper baron Robert Maxwell "without incident" in Bradford, New Hampshire at 8:30 am (1330 GMT), Kristen Setera, spokeswoman for the agency's Boston office, told AFP.

Epstein, 66, killed himself in a federal detention center in NY last summer while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.

The arrest involves Maxwell's charges stemming from an investigation by NY federal prosecutors into Epstein's alleged sexual abuse of girls and young women. In addition to allegedly enabling and participating in the sexual abuse of young victims, Maxwell compounded her crimes by repeatedly lying in 2016 when she was questioned under oath. Their names were not disclosed in court filings.

"Now that the ring has been taken down, I know that I can't be hurt anymore", Araoz, now 33, said in a statement.

Maxwell was charged with two counts of perjury, after testifying to a grand jury, among other things, that she never gave Epstein or an underage victim a massage, and that she was unaware that the disgraced financier possessed or used sex toys during sexual activities. All the while, she was setting them up to be sexually abused by Epstein and, in some cases, by Maxwell herself.

Attorney David Boies, who represents some of Epstein's accusers, said it "is a great day for justice".

"This stunning custom-designed Timber Frame home is an awesome retreat for the nature lover who also wants total privacy", one website said, describing it as a four-bedroom, four-bath home totaling 4,365 sq ft.

Hundreds of elephants die mysteriously in Botswana 'disaster'
But the government in Botswana says that no information is available yet, with samples not yet tested due to coronavirus. Several live elephants appeared weak and emaciated, suggesting more will die in the coming weeks.

"Many of those massages resulted in Epstein sexually abusing the minor victims", the indictment said. The indictment included the image of Epstein and Maxwell that you see at the top of this story.

Maxwell has repeatedly denied the allegations. He was free a little after a year in prison.

Epstein was initially investigated in Florida and pleaded guilty to state charges in 2008 that allowed him to avoid a lengthy prison sentence.

Geoffrey Berman, the former USA attorney in Manhattan, argued that federal prosecutors in NY were not bound by that agreement and brought a sweeping indictment against Epstein.

After Robert Maxwell's mysterious death in 1991, Mawell headed to NY, where she fell in with Epstein.

Leah Saffian, a lawyer for Maxwell, declined to comment on the charges.

Several victims have come forward alleging that Maxwell acted as a "madame" and connected them with high profile men to engage in illicit sexual activities. Click the link to confirm your subscription and begin receiving our newsletters.
