Mumbai's 2-km radius diktat: Cops seize 16k vehicles on Monday

The reason for this direction is overcrowding at beaches, promenades and public places while Covid-19 infections are still rising.

The traffic unit of Mumbai police seized 8,611 vehicles, comprising 1601 private cars, 6241 two-wheelers, 474 autorickshaws and 295 taxis on Monday, he added.

The police had warned of strict action against offenders as the travel movement beyond 2 km was relaxed only for attending office and medical emergencies.

The residents were told only to visit markets, salons and parks close to their residence, and avoid stepping out necessarily. As many as 6,800 vehicles were impounded by the police from various parts of Mumbai on Sunday for violation of the lockdown norms, an official said.

Nine more NBA players test positive for COVID-19
With nine players being diagnosed with COVID-19 from June 24-29, a total of 25 players have tested positive over the last week. Less than a week ago, the state had surpassed a record of 9,585 confirmed cases, set on Saturday.

The police will be ensuring everyone follows the new restrictions strictly, with violators being penalised severely. "The onus of defeating COVID-19 lies on all of us and we can achieve this only when we follow the personal safety and social distancing guidelines at all times", the police said in the statement.

"It is our honest appeal that all citizens behave responsibly and avoid unnecessary movement".
