Of 2 Protesters Hit By Driver On Seattle Driveway Dies

Two protesters in Seattle were struck and severely injured by a speeding vehicle on a closed section of interstate early in the morning on Saturday, police say.

Summer Taylor was only 24-years-old when she was killed on Saturday night. she passed away at Harborview Medical Center.

"He was placed in custody when troopers arrived on scene", Chase Van Cleave, a Washington State Patrol trooper told Reuters by phone earlier.

Mr Kelete was charged with two counts of vehicular assault on Saturday and denied bail. Troopers didn't know whether it was a targeted attack, but impairment was not considered a factor, Capt Mead said.

Following the episode, authorities cleared I-5 and warned protesters that anyone caught attempting to march on to the freeway will be arrested. Protesters had shut down the highway for 19 consecutive days up until Friday night, Washington State Patrol Capt. Ron Mead said at a press conference.

Officials said the vehicle barrelled through a panicked crowd of protesters on Interstate 5 (I-5) in the early hours of 4 July, hitting Taylor along with Diaz Love, 32, of Portland. According to TMZ, the man's name is Dawit Kelet, and he could be subjected to even more charges now that Taylor has died.

A almost two-hour-long Facebook livestream captioned "Black Femme March takes I-5" from Diaz Love ended abruptly; with about 15 seconds left, shouts of "Car!" can be heard as the camera starts to shake before screeching tires and the sound of impact are heard.

Washington State Patrol offered their condolences to Taylor's family and friends, while Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan said the city supports the victims' loved ones. His enrollment status could not be confirmed because the university was closed Saturday.

Seattle, like many U.S. cities, has been the site of prolonged unrest following the May 25 police killing of unarmed black man George Floyd in Minneapolis.

Seattle police tweeted that they were assisting the State Patrol with the scene, as southbound lanes of the freeway remained closed for investigation.

"My hope is, as a result of this tragedy, protesters will reconsider their desire to be on the interstate because I can not guarantee their safety, plain and simple", Mead said.

Mead stressed that the freeway is "simply not a safe place" to hold protests.

Both women were struck by a white Jaguar automobile on Interstate 5 around 1:30 a.m. local time.
