India Surpasses Russia In Reported Coronavirus Infections

India on Monday overtook Russian Federation to record the world's third-highest number of coronavirus infections at almost 700,000, even as its hardest-hit state said it will allow hotels to reopen this week.

The country has recorded over 20,000 cases of the infection for the fourth consecutive day. Also, with 425 people succumbing to the lethal virus in the last 24 hours, the country was second in the daily number of worldwide deaths - behind Brazil that recorded 602 fatalities, officials said.

Delhi, India's capital, leads the country in new Covid-19 cases, according to the BBC, with a lack of testing and contract tracing playing a small role in the massive caseload.

According to the ICMR, a cumulative total of 1,02,11,092 samples have been tested up to July 6 with 2,41,430 samples being tested on Monday. India's death toll is now the world's seventh highest, behind the United States, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Italy, France and Spain.

Maharashtra has reported the highest number of cases at 2,11,987 followed by Tamil Nadu at 1,14,978, Delhi at 1,00,823, Gujarat at 36,772, Uttar Pradesh at 28,636, Telangana at 25,733 and Karnataka at 25,317, according to the ministry data. Punjab has reported 6,491 novel coronavirus infections so far, while Kerala has 5,622 cases. Passengers won't be able to fly to India due to government restrictions but the Indian Express reports that United will operate three flights from Delhi to Newark in mid-July.
