NASA and SpaceX are looking to finish up the final demonstration mission of SpaceX's Crew Dragon astronaut spacecraft at the end of this week, but it's already looking ahead to Crew-2 - the second operational flight of Crew Dragon, now set for sometime next spring. This is a regular mission, meaning the crew will be staffing the International Space Station for an extended period - six months for this stretch, sharing the orbital research platform with three astronauts who will be using a Russian Soyuz spacecraft to make the trip. A main goal of NASA's partnership with SpaceX is to give other countries' space agencies a viable alternative to Soyuz rockets as well. It denoted the first run through in history that a business vehicle conveyed people into space and the first manned dispatch from U.S. soil since NASA's Space Shuttle resigned in 2011.

The crew will consist of veterans of previous ISS missions, including JAXA's Akihiko Hoshide, European Space Agency's Thomas Perequed, and Shane Kimbrough and Megan McArthur, who are NASA astronauts. Also joining the trip will be astronauts Akihiko Hoshide from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency and Thomas Pesquet of the European Space Agency. NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley are established to arrive again to Earth, leaving the International Place Station on August 1 and splashing down in the Atlantic on August 2. He first launched aboard space shuttle Endeavour for a visit to the station in 2008 and again aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft for Expedition 49/50 in 2016. In total, the retired Army colonel has spent 189 days in space and conducted six spacewalks. She has gone to space twice but has made only one trip to the space station in 2004 and was part of the last Hubble telescope servicing mission in 2009 where she spent 12 days and 21 hours in space.

She previously flew in the space shuttle Atlantis on a mission to fix the Hubble Space Telescope.

The mission, carried out aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery, was the second of three mission to deliver the Japanese Experiment Module (KIBO) to the ISS.
