Trump raises possibility of delaying election, but that power rests in Congress

U.S. President Donald Trump took to Twitter Thursday morning and called for the 2020 presidential election to be delayed due to mail-in voting.

Trump, without evidence, repeated his claims of mail-in voter fraud and raised the question of a delay, writing: "delay the election until people can properly, securely and safely vote???"

"With Universal Mail-In Voting (not Absentee Voting, which is good), 2020 will be the most INACCURATE & FRAUDULENT Election in history", the president tweeted.

"As a reminder, @realDonaldTrump, America is a democracy, and we'll hold a safe and secure election on November 3rd, regardless of your objections", Price wrote.

The "Presidential Election Day Act", passed by Congress in 1845, mandates that "the electors of President and Vice President shall be appointed in each State on the Tuesday next after the first Monday in the month of November of the year in which they are to be appointed".

Trump, who is trailing challenger and former Vice President Joe Biden in opinion polls, had previously meant to focus his re-election bid on the nation's economic performance.

Trump on Thursday floated the possibility of delaying November's general election, in a fiery new warning about the implications of mail-in ballots.

Our guess? Trump is just trolling Democrats on the issue of mail-in voting ... albeit not very effectively.

Trump has refused to commit to accept the results of the upcoming presidential election.

Thirty per cent of them are Saudi citizens while the remaining seventy per cent are foreign nationals residing in the kingdom. In March, Riyadh suspended the year-round umrah pilgrimage, as the number of global coronavirus cases continued to climb.

"You are one of the most highly trained and accomplished lawyers who are part of this administration", Kaine said, and posed the question again, "Can a president delay a presidential election?"

Presidential historian Michael Beschloss was quick to tweet a reminder that there has never been a successful move to "delay the election" for a president. In the proceeding 175 years, the president has been chosen in elections taking place between November 2 and November 8, every four years.

"A sitting President is peddling lies and suggesting delaying the election to keep himself in power".

States could postpone the dates their residents hit the polls, but they must send in their electoral votes by December 23, according to the U.S. Constitution Center.

Kaine continued to push Pompeo for an answer "on the record" about whether Trump could delay the November 3 election. Floridians who wish to mail in their ballots have to request the ability to do so from their local supervisors of elections.

"The election is not going to be delayed in spite of the fact that several states delayed the election, but we got to make sure that we have the resources and we don't have the debacle that we're seeing in, say the state of New York", Tillis told NBC reporter Garrett Haake on Capitol Hill on Thursday.

"Mark my words: I think he is gonna try to kick back the election somehow, come up with some rationale why it can't be held", Biden said.

Mr Trump's suggestion to delay the presidential vote, posted on Twitter, came just moments after the Commerce Department released figures showing the USA economy recorded its biggest GDP decline in seven decades.

Tom Ridge, a Republican who previously served as the governor of Pennsylvania and was the nation's first secretary of Homeland Security, recently told ABC News, "There is absolutely no antecedent, no factual basis for [President Trump's] claim of massive fraud in mail voting". But then he said this widespread mail-in balloting that people are talking about is insecure.
