Wisconsin Republicans break with Trump on election delay

"Nearly all of these voters were white", Zogby noted, and predominantly hail from the Rust Belt and Midwestern states that handed Trump the election - including Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. However, Republicans and Democrats immediately dismissed the suggestion saying the power belongs to Congress, not the president.

There is no evidence of widespread voter fraud through mail-in voting and the states that use it exclusively say they have necessary safeguards in place to ensure that a hostile foreign actor doesn't disrupt the vote.

"We shouldn't delay the November election either", Vos tweeted.

The president can not legally postpone or cancel the election, but Democrats are concerned that Trump will restrict voting during the ongoing pandemic and sow doubt in the election's outcome.

Mr Trump appears to be doing everything in his power to undermine the credibility of November's vote, in which a record number of Americans are predicted to rely on mail-in voting to avoid the risk of exposure to the coronavirus. The Constitution provides that power to Congress, who passed a law in 1948 specifying election day as the first Tuesday in November.

He suggested a delay until people can "properly, securely and safely" vote.

In a tweet tonight, Mr Trump said "universal mail-in voting" would make the vote the "most inaccurate and fraudulent election in history".

Any move by Congress to delay the election into 2021 would also require a constitutional amendment, U.S. media quoted constitutional experts as saying.

Former President Barack Obama on Tuesday said that one of his greatest fears is President Donald Trump successfully suppressing votes and undermining the legitimacy of the 2020 election.

The tweet came shortly after the government reported bad economic news. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell asked him if he was in favor of delaying the election.

Earlier this month, six USA states were planning to hold "all-mail" ballot elections in November: California, Utah, Hawaii, Colorado, Oregon and Washington.

These states will automatically send postal ballots to all registered voters, which then have to be sent back or dropped off on election day - although some in-person voting is still available in certain limited circumstances.

Over the past 20 years, more than 250 million mail-in ballots have been cast, and there have been only 143 criminal prosecutions for mail ballot fraud, or a fraud rate of about 0.00006%.

Most states are still finalizing their plans for November.

Five more states - California, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey and Vermont - are set to join in this year, and around 17 states are going to send mail-in voting applications to every registered voter. That exceeds the 645,619 total votes cast in the 2016 primary. "I'm not thinking about it at all", Trump said.
