Noting that the country has lost an able parliamentarian, Naidu said, "Shri Singh was popular across the political spectrum and always strove for the uplift of the downtrodden and marginalised sections of society".

Singh had been admitted to the Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore for the last seven months. As a Youth Congress member in the 1980s, he came into the orbit of then Uttar Pradesh chief minister Vir Bahadur Singh but it was a chance encounter with Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav in 1996 on board a plane that changed his fortunes.

Earlier this morning, Singh had tweeted a tribute to freedom fighter and educationist Bal Gangadhar Tilak on his death anniversary and also wished Eid Al Adha to all his followers.

Kalraj Mishra, another senior BJP leader, expressed grief on Amar Singh's death.

Singh was quite active on social media despite his illness. He was once considered SP founder Mulayam Singh's close confidante. Singh had denied the allegations. However, in 2010 there was a fallout and Singh resigned from all party posts and was soon expelled.

Mr Singh's name later emerged in the alleged cash-for-votes scam liked to the 2008 vote on the no-confidence motion in Lok Sabha and he was arrested in 2011.

Due to his proximity with the Bachchans, he had convinced Jaya Bachchans to represent the Samajwadi Party in Rajya Sabha.

It was he who brought actor Jaya Prada, who was once a Telugu Desam Party MP, into the SP, and she was elected to Lok Sabha from Rampur twice.

In February this year, Mr Singh had apologised to Amitabh Bachchan for "overreaction" against the superstar.
