Top U.S. infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci on Friday resisted efforts by a staunch ally of President Donald Trump to turn his testimony about controlling the coronavirus pandemic into criticism of protests against racial injustice.

"You should stay away from crowds, no matter where the crowds are", Fauci said during the combative parley.

In response to Luetkemeyer, Fauci said the particular study he cited was not controlled and was riddled with "confounding issues" - one being that coronavirus patients who received hydroxychloroquine were simultaneously treated with steroids, which has been shown on its own to improve outcomes for weakened patients.

In addition to Fauci, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Dr. Robert Redfield and Admiral Brett Giroir, assistant secretary at the Department of Health and Human Services, also testified.

This week, Trump, who has often bristled against scientists' advice on responding to the pandemic, bemoaned the degree to which Fauci is admired, saying "nobody likes me". Topping the list could be critical workers, such as as medical personnel, or vulnerable groups of people such as older adults with other underlying health problems. "You made comments on dating, baseball, and everything you can imagine. I'm just asking should we try to limit the protesting?"

"I'm not favoring anybody over anybody", Fauci replied.

"Crowding together, particularly when you're not wearing a mask, contributes to the spread of the virus".

"So you're allowed to protest - millions of people on one day, in crowds, yelling, screaming - but you try to run your business, you get arrested?"

"Their appearance follows reports that more than 1,000 Americans died from the coronavirus yesterday, the highest number of daily coronavirus deaths in more than a month, as the number of new cases continues to rise", they said. Jordan compared such a move to closing houses of worship and businesses during shutdowns and suggested Fauci unequally judged certain activities over others as worthy of government intervention. Despite those advances, Dr. Fauci doesn't think the US will have to "depend" on other countries for a vaccine though.

"Somebody please tell Congressman Clyburn, who doesn't have a clue, that the chart he put up indicating more CASES for the USA than Europe, is because we do MUCH MORE testing than any other country in the World", Trump wrote.
