Australian state of Victoria imposes curfew, state of disaster to contain coronavirus

COVID-19 cases in Victoria have spiked in the past month to be far higher than during Australia's initial coronavirus wave, which peaked in late March.

Victoria on Saturday reported the deaths of a man and two women aged in their 80s and 90s, plus 397 new cases, significantly less than Thursday's peak of 723.

"It's not a tap you can just turn on or off, and they are not decisions that would be taken lightly because there are significant costs", Andrews said.

'We need to do more.

Moves being considered as part of the stage four response include an nearly total shutdown of Melbourne's bus, tram and rail networks, stricter rules that would force residents to stay even closer to their homes and the shutdown of many more businesses.

The state of disaster gives Victoria police additional powers to ensure people are complying with public-health directions.

All students across the state will return to home-based learning and childcare centres will be closed.

There were four new deaths from COVID-19 confirmed on Saturday; three in Victoria and one in New South Wales.

Australia's total reported infections reached nearly 18,000 on Sunday, with 208 deaths in a population of 25 million.

He said after much detailed analysis, the state's health experts told him the current strategy would not see the state reach a point where it could reopen until the end of the year. The overwhelming majority of active cases are also of unknown origin.

Japan in total reported 1,540 cases on Saturday- the second straight day the number was above 1,500. Numbers are usually fewer over the weekend because of fewer tests. - South Korea has reported 30 additional case of the coronavirus, a lot of them associated with worldwide arrivals. The agency says eight of the newly confirmed cases were locally infected while the rest came from overseas.

"That is why we find ourselves in a position to evaluate these things and we can't rule out further steps being taken, they are being taken because that is what is necessary, there will be nothing else driving it but when I am in a position to make further announcements of course I will". It's got the most cases, the most deaths and the biggest ongoing problem with the virus.
