Musk says that Tesla's interest in licensing stems from its underlying goal, which is "to accelerate sustainable energy, not crush competitors", according to his tweet.

Musk, the CEO of electric vehicle company Tesla, needs nickel to satisfy his company's insatiable appetite for batteries.

Tesla has previously supplied batteries to Mercedes-Benz and Toyota under separate partnership deals.

"Tesla is open to licensing software and supplying powertrains & batteries".

Nor would it necessarily negatively impact Tesla's own auto sales, as the company offers a number of other selling points above and beyond its underlying powertrain and battery tech. Moreover, Tesla's last earnings call saw CEO Elon Musk and president of Automotive Jerome Guillen agree that this was Tesla's biggest property.

Tesla has launched a hiring spree in Shanghai with plans to bring on designers at its China studio and about 1,000 factory workers, job posts show, as the US electric vehicle maker ramps up production in the world's biggest auto market. Tesla now runs a battery joint venture with Panasonic, but also sources batteries from China's Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) and South Korea's LG Chem.

Tesla's battery production could be ramping up, though, as reports further suggest an extended battery manufacturing centre could be soon under construction in Fremont, California.

"The strategy, if successful, will increase the EV market's dependence on Tesla", he said. It started with the acquisition of Maxwell, a supercapacitor manufacturer with some dry electrode technology, and this would enable Tesla to produce cheaper cells with a higher-energy density that would enable them to use fewer batteries per vehicle and still achieve longer range.
