MTV Video Music Awards add two pandemic-specific categories

The annual MTV VMAs will air live August 30 at 8pm EST on MTV.

K-pop giant BTS won three nominations for the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards in the United States, according to the American television network Thursday (local time).

Gaga and Grande equally scored twice nominations each, such as video of the year to get their No. 1 dance hit.

Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande have the most nominations this year with nine each followed by The Weeknd and Billie Eilish with six each.

The awards also include a video for good category, which this year features a number of songs about the Black Lives Matter movement, including HER's I Can't Breathe, Anderson.Paak's Lockdown and Lil Baby's The Bigger Picture.

This year the VMAs will feature two new categories reflecting the coronavirus pandemic's impact on the music industry - best music video from home and best quarantine performance.

Grande's first duet with Canadian singer Justin Bieber, Stuck With U, was nominated in the new Best Music Video from Home field, along with rapper Drake's Tootsie Slide, Legend's Bigger Love, and Level Of Concern from music duo Twenty One Pilots. "Additional nominees include Gaga's" Smile" in the TV special" One Planet: "Together At House";Legend's".togetherathome" concert; DJ D-Nice's" Club MTV gifts.DanceTogether"; CNCO's" MTV Unplugged In Home"; and Post Malone's tribute to Nirvana.

The Video for Good nominees were dominated by artists' responses to the worldwide protests after George Floyd's death in the USA, including I Can't Breathe by H.E.R., The Bigger Picture by Lil Baby, and Lockdown by Anderson Paak.

Swift, who released a surprise album last week, will also compete for video for good with her song about sexism, 'The Man.' She scored five nominations overall, while Drake, Dua Lipa, J Balvin, and Bieber earned four nominations apiece.

However, both Grande and Eilish were overlooked in the coveted artist of the year race, which is comprised of Gaga, Megan Thee Stallion, Post Malone, The Weeknd, Bieber and DaBaby.

"BTS, Harry Styles, Roddy Ricch, Post Malone, Future, Karol G along with Doja Cat - that topped the charts this season along with her Dr. Luke-produced crush" Say So" - also got three nods each.
