A large explosion rocked Beirut on Tuesday, injuring many people as glass shattered and balconies collapsed from the impact, Reuters witnesses said. The Lebanese Red Cross tweeted that more than 30 teams were responding to the scene of the blast via ambulances.

The AP, citing local TV stations, reports that the blast took place at Beirut's port, and "shook several parts of the capital".

Residents have reported homes being completely destroyed, as well as windows being blown out and ceilings dropping.

Lebanon's state news agency NNA and two security sources said the blast had occurred in the port area where there are warehouses housing explosives.

As of noon Eastern time, there were no official reports of casualties, a specific target, or possible perpetrators if the explosions were deliberate bombings, but Lebanon is now experiencing a great deal of political upheaval.

"The force of the blast was massive", said Al Jazeera's Zeina Khodr, reporting from Beirut.
