The deal also allows the government to acquire up to 500 million additional doses after the initial order.

"Unfortunately, the products that Russian Federation has developed under the name of "coronavirus vaccine" have not yet been approved by worldwide authorities", said Mohraz.

Part of the agreement includes collaboration with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and Department of Defense, which the companies expect will help fund vaccine development activities and secure scale-up manufacturing capabilities in the United States, resulting in a significant increase in capacity.

"In my opinion, there are other countries which are way ahead of Russian Federation when it comes to the production of the coronavirus vaccine and are still going through the testing stage".

Laboratories need the money to accelerate the early stages of vaccine development and prepare production units without fearing they will be left out of pocket if the candidate drugs fail.
