But while Warner Bros.is moving forward with a theatrical release plan, which involves opening Tenet internationally first and then in select US theaters a week later, on September 3, Disney made a decision to pivot and direct consumers to its streaming service.

"For most, if not all big studio movies, between 70-80 per cent of all box office is offshore, and it feels like that's been forgotten".

Chapek said the plan for Mulan represented a one-time shift amid the pandemic and did not signal a change to Disney's long-term film strategy.

The company's theme parks, cruise lines, movie business and sports broadcasting division have all been hit hard by the pandemic, overshadowing the wildly successful launch of Disney Plus, its streaming rival to Netflix. It will not be included as part of the normal subscription plan.

Chapek said the new Star-branded general entertainment offering will be "fully integrated" into Disney+ in many markets.

Tuesday, Disney reported a $US4.7 billion loss in its third quarter, led by a $US3.5 billion loss from the closure of its parks.

US Treasury should get a cut in Microsoft's TikTok deal
Donald Trump has said the USA should get a cut from the sale of TikTok's United States unit if it is bought by an American firm. Such shilly-shallying is a tactic the U.S. administration employed during the trade deal negotiations with China.

Its TV unit, however, was able to hold the line, as revenue stayed mostly flat at $6.6 billion compared to $6.7 billion a year ago, with many advertisers already paid up through the quarter. The service is growing faster than many analysts expected, reaching 54.5 million in May and adding six million subscribers since.

Disney Plus Hotstar was created in March when the new launch Disney Plus service was grafted on to the existing and wildly successful Hotstar platform in India that Disney acquired when it bought 20th Century Fox in 2019.

Disney+ now has 60.5 million subscribers, the company said. Meaning, if Mulan does well, this is how many people might be watching Black Widow in November. On Tuesday, investors, apparently reacting to the digital "Mulan" announcement, sent the share price up 6 percent in afterhours trading.

Chapek says The Walt Disney Company is going to learn from "Mulan" in regards to future tentpoles going directly to Disney+ premium. Walt Disney World in Florida - where, despite surges in cases, the government has loosened restrictions on the economy faster than in many other states - reopened last month with limited capacity and strict protocols to limit the risk of spreading the coronavirus.

Disney Park Pass availability at Disney's Hollywood Studios has been in strong demand amongst Annual Passholders, with weekends already booked through October.
