Big 12 Forges Ahead with Plans to Play Football and Fall Sports

It's now unknown if the Big Ten and NCAA would clear teams to play through the spring and then immediately begin preparations for standard fall calendars, especially if other conferences hold amended football seasons over the final four months of 2020.

The Big Ten and Pac-12 were also the first conferences to opt for a conference-only schedules, well ahead of the other three conferences decision. Following positive tests, athletes will undergo an EKG, troponin blood test, echocardiogram, and a cardiac MRI.

COVID-19 has brought some conferences together, and drove others further apart. After a break, you'll hear from Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby, who says the league is taking its cues from medical professionals. "Opinions vary regarding the best path forward, as we've seen throughout higher education and our society overall, but we are comfortable in our institutions' ability to provide a structured training environment, rigorous testing and surveillance, hospital quality sanitation and mitigation practices that optimize the health and safety of our student-athletes". We believe all of this combines to create an ideal learning and training situation during this time of COVID-19.

The Big Ten officially postponed football and fall sports on Tuesday due to the uncontrolled virus outbreak, a decision that left coaches such as Day and Brohm scrambling for ideas.

Dr. Cameron Wolfe, a Duke infectious disease specialist, told Sports Business Daily that the conference could mitigate the risk of students contracting the coronavirus while playing football "at a level that's no different than living as a student on campus". Nebraska confirmed on Thursday that the university won't look to compete outside of the Big Ten this fall even if conferences such as the Big 12, ACC and SEC play.

Capacity for the stadiums will be determined by each member institution in accordance with local and/or state health ordinances, and working with government officials, the conference said.

All Big 12 sports' competitions will commence after September 1.
