Aubameyang, who has scored 55 goals in 86 league appearances since his move from Borussia Dortmund in January 2018, has reportedly signed a three-year deal that ties him to Arsenal until 2023 - when he will be 34.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano claimed that Aubameyang had turned down at least two bids to stay, confirming what club sources had always said: that it was a matter of when - not if - the skipper signed a new deal.

At one stage last term, he admitted he faced a big decision over his future, fuelling reports that he was ready to leave amid interest from Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta hailed the Gabonese forward's commitment to the club, noting that he is an important part of the squad.

"I want to leave a legacy, this is where I belong, this is my family". "Others have left us in the past but you stayed when we needed you most", Wright said.

"I believe in Arsenal. We have something exciting here and I believe the best is to come for Arsenal".

Aubameyang scored in Arsenal's victory at Fulham on Saturday, the first game of the new Premier League season.

Runarsson, who now plies his trade in France, had a mixed season last term with Dijon, only making 11 Ligue 1 appearances.

So he's certainly not a top level goalkeeper yet and it would be a big risk to rely on Runarsson to deputise in the Premier League if Leno was to get injured again this season.

It is major coup for Arsenal to keep Aubameyang and securing his future will maintain should allow Arteta to maintain the team's improvement since he took charge in December.

Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta picked a non surprising lineup as he didn't have many options but he however left out several players as the Premier League made a decision to end the five substitute rule introduced at end of last season. He's a superb player with an incredible mentality.

He was by far Villa's best player, but there was fear amongst the fanbase that they would lose their star man to a club in Europe this summer. "He can achieve that here".
