With Timo Werner snapped up from RB Leipzig and Hakim Ziyech signed from Ajax earlier, Chelsea stepped up their squad rebuild as England full-back Ben Chilwell was signed in a £50m deal while Leicester and Brazil captain Thiago Silva will also be part of Frank Lampard's handsomely boosted Blues squad for the new season.

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard says Chelsea's spending in the close season means they can not shy away from increased expectations.

Sizeable investment from club owner Roman Abramovich means that Lampard is now expected to deliver tangible success, but he claims pressure has always been part of his job.

"I was less annoyed with it, I found it more, slightly amusing", said Lampard.

Klopp said on Thursday that Manchester City and Chelsea were more immune to the financial effects of the coronavirus pandemic due to being "owned by countries, owned by oligarchs" and added that Liverpool "are a different kind of club" from them.

"I loved the nurturing past year, but I never wanted us to become an academy club", he told Sky Sports. "We reached the Champions League final two years ago, won it the following year and won the Premier League by being the club we are".

"I think with Liverpool's story - and I referenced it a lot last year, Liverpool's story - it's a fantastic story of a club over four-and-a-half, five years that Jurgen Klopp's been there that have managed to get recruitment right to a really high level".

Chelsea have spent more than £200million on new recruits in the busiest summer of any Premier League club.

"The reality is - other than maybe Leicester, which was an incredible story - most clubs that win the League in the modern day have recruited well and have recruited at quite a high level money-wise", the former England worldwide begun.

Lampard was widely credited for handing Chelsea's best young talents an opportunity last season, with players such as Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham thriving after being given regular minutes at Stamford Bridge, though it remains to be seen if the club's academy youngsters continue that development amid increased competition for a first-team place.

"You can go through the Liverpool players - [Virgil] Van Dijk, Alisson, Fabinho, [Naby] Keita, [Sadio] Mane, [Mohamed] Salah".

'The smart thing Liverpool have done is believe in their coach and believe in their system for a number of years, so it's a great story. It's par for the course (spending big) and we all know that. "It is a great story but it is a story that has spent money on players".
