Smoke From Deadly US Wildfires to Reduce Air Quality for Another Day

At least 28 people in have died because of the fires in Washington State, Oregon and California since mid-August, many of them in the past few days.

Poor air quality also contributed to the closure of eight parks in Los Angeles County: Eaton Canyon, Devil's Punchbowl, Frank G. Bonelli Regional Park, Lario Staging Area, Marshall Canyon, Peck Road Water Conservation Park, San Dimas Canyon Natural Area and Santa Fe Dam Recreation Area. Air quality in Metro Vancouver remains at a rating of 10+ Saturday, indicating a "very high" health risk. The Southwest Clean Air Agency registered particulate pollution at 500, the top of its air-quality index.

Officials said that fire was started by a blown transformer. She says they're concerned about the small particles in that grey smokey air, that can sneak past the human body's defense system like nasal hairs, and get deeper into the lungs. "When you have a smoke event in a population, you typically will see increased mortality, and increased hospital visits for pneumonia and other infectious diseases".

Forecast Upper-level winds will continue to steer smoke into Montana today and Monday.
