A spokesperson for the South Dakota Department of Public Safety said details about the auto accident, like whether alcohol was a factor and if any charges are pending, are expected to be shared on Monday.

Nemec said that he went with his brother to identify Boever's body on Sunday evening, about 20 hours after the incident occurred. "South Dakota Highway Patrol routinely investigates fatality crashes across our state and we will handle this as we would any other fatal crash".

Victor Nemec, Boever's cousin, said in an interview with the Argus Leader that the attorney general "hit my cousin as he was walking down the side of the road and killed him".

Ravnsborg's chief of staff Timothy Bormann called the episode "a tragic accident" in a statement released Monday.

"I saw that statement sometime Sunday afternoon, at kind of the same time we were coming to the realization that the victim was our cousin, and he already offered a statement of condolences to the family, and he didn't even know who the family was, because we hadn't identified the body yet". Boever had been fatally hit by a vehicle.

According to South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, the South Dakota Highway Patrol will be conducting an investigation.

The spokesman said that while Mr Ravnsborg did drink occasionally, he did not make a habit of drinking during Lincoln Day events, which he was attending the night of the incident. "The Attorney General, and our office, are cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation of this event and will continue to do so", Price continued.

Ravnsborg, a Republican, was elected alongside Noem in 2018. CNN has reached out to the attorney general for comment on the crash.

He was also cited for a seat belt violation in 2017 and paid a $25 fine, according to state records.
