Barbados to dump Queen Elizabeth and become a republic

"Our country can be in no doubt about its capacity for self-governance", Barbados' Governor General Sandra Mason, who was appointed by the queen, said late Tuesday. "At the very personal level I have tremendous regard for Her Majesty, I have a very good relationship with Prince Charles, our countries have had deep relationships, and I think we're mature enough to know the time has come for us to move forward".

"Barbadians want a Barbadian Head of State", she said.

"This is the ultimate statement of confidence in who we are and what we are capable of achieving".

Then in 2015, former prime minister Freundel Stuart announced Barbados would seek to become a republic by the island's 50th independence anniversary, a plan that didn't materialize.

The Queen is now the formal head of state in 16 countries and Barbados remains a member of the Commonwealth, a union of 54 countries, the majority of which are former British colonies.

Ms Mottley confirmed the Barbados Government had not yet spoken directly with Buckingham Palace but said she believed the British people would support Barbados, likening the two countries' relationship to that of a family.

The Prince of Wales during a walkabout with the Prime Minister of Barbados Ms Mia Mottley a year ago. In 1998, a constitutional review commission in the country recommended that Barbados become a republic.

Barbados plans to remove Queen as head of state and become republic

It was quickly settled and stayed in British hands over the centuries, unlike other Caribbean islands that were fought over by the Spanish, British, Dutch, French and Americans.

Experts have also said that move could have received an impetus thanks to the Black Lives Matter movement and its worldwide anti-racism protests after the death of George Floyd in the USA in May.

In St Vincent and the Grenadines, a 2009 referendum saw voters reject the proposal to oust the monarchy and substitute it with a republic.

However, many thought of the link as a lingering symbol of imperialism and racism- a view that seems to have become overwhelmingly popular today.

"Anyway. Barbados already has a Queen and her name is @rihanna", quipped Simon Naitram, a lecturer at The University of the West Indies at Cave Hill on the island. "She is Queen of many countries around the Commonwealth", Ghany said. The last country that removed the Queen as its Head of State was Mauritius in 1992.
