Hurricane Sally leaves section of Three Mile Bridge missing in Pensacola

Thousands in coastal Alabama and the Florida Panhandle began recovering from Hurricane Sally on Thursday after the storm caused extensive damage and is believed responsible for at least one death.

MIAMI - Sally continues to weaken as it moves over the South after hitting the Gulf Coast as a Category 2 hurricane but is still a unsafe rainmaker as it moves into Georgia on a path to the Carolinas.

At least one person is dead and another reported missing, with more than 400,000 homes in Alabama, Florida and Georgia left without power.

Meanwhile, Florida and Alabama National Guard troops were working Thursday to help civilian first responders in search-and-rescue and other missions after the storm cleared. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 60 miles from the centre and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 230 miles.”.

Authorities warned that rain from the storm could swell eight waterways in Florida and Alabama to record levels. Federal forecasters warned even more flooding was likely in the area in the coming days as rain-swollen rivers and creeks were expected to overflow.

"This year we've just got hurricane after hurricane", said Matt Lane, 23, a member of a crew from New Hampshire Electric Coop, who arrived late on Tuesday directly from Hurricane Laura recovery efforts in Texas.

Another resident, Toby Wallace, 49, said the storm surge brought 3 feet (91 cm) of water into his elevated home.

In its 11am update, the US National Hurricane Centre said Teddy has maximum sustained winds that are near 120 miles per hour (195 km/h) with higher gusts. There is also a threat for tornadoes from central Georgia into Charleston, South Carolina, and into Wilmington and eastern North Carolina.

The destruction came after the storm hit the region as a Category Two hurricane on Wednesday.

The Chattahoochee River, which affects Muscogee, Chattahoochee, and Lee and Russell counties, remains under a flood warning until 2 a.m. September 20.

The center of the storm may move to Georgia and SC on Thursday, as Sally is expected to inch its way to move towards northeastward through Alabama. And it predicts Hurricane Teddy will become a major hurricane as it heads toward Bermuda, with an arrival time likely late Sunday or early Monday.
