There was no question that Square Enix was also working on another mainline title after the release of Final Fantasy XV being a number of years ago now.

The latest PlayStation 5 showcase was a big one, kicking off with a Final Fantasy XVI trailer and closing with a God of War sequel teaser.

It is likely that Square Enix judged last June the graphic impact of Final Fantasy 16 not up to Sony's demands.

Perhaps even bigger than the reveal itself that we knew had to be coming is that Final Fantasy XVI will be a console exclusive for the PlayStation 5.

Update 6:39pm ET: Uh, apparently Final Fantasy XVI might not be coming to PC? What is certain is that Square Enix has more announcements in store for this 2020. Instead, the developer announced a brand new title named "Project Althia", ScreenRant reports. This demo offers the first chapter of the remake of the game released more than 20 years ago for the first PlayStation, but with obvious graphical improvements. He's been with the Final Fantasy series since Final Fantasy V, through all of it's ups and downs, but the thread reminds us that he was "involved in the SaGa series and "also directed The Last Remnant" to get a better understanding of outside influences beyond just Final Fantasy".

Naoki Yoshida is the current producer and director of Final Fantasy XIV.

"The exclusive footage, comprised of both battles and cutscenes running in real-time, represents but a fraction of what our team has accomplished since the start of development on this, an all-new Final Fantasy game". The reveal trailer already shows Shiva, Ifrit, and Phoenix. "And though we're pouring our hearts and souls into this project each and every day, it may still be some time before we can get it into your hands". However, I promise it will be worth the wait! It will be a PS5 timed exclusive. Going further into speculation, they say the trailer music sounds like Final Fantasy XIV composer Masayoshi Soken's work, again, unconfirmed at this time.
