Oxford University, AstraZeneca's partner on the vaccine, has already resumed its trial in Britain.

A total of 50,000 people are due to participate globally in the trials.

AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford have not disclosed any medical information on the nature of the illness.

"The UK committee has concluded its investigations and recommended to the MHRA that trials in the UK are safe to resume".

The illness that triggered the global pause, which occurred in a woman who was in the vaccine arm of the United Kingdom trial, has not been officially disclosed, though AstraZeneca CEO Pascal Soriot told a group of investors on Wednesday that her symptoms were consistent with transverse myelitis, a serious condition involving inflammation of the spinal cord that can cause muscle weakness, paralysis, pain and bladder problems, American health-oriented news website Stat News reported.

The status of the South African and Indian trials remains unknown, but the trial in Brazil has also restarted.

It is an early phase of the research, in which it is meant to evaluate which is the most appropriate dose and schedule in terms of activity to achieve the best antibody response (those that generate immunity against the virus), as well as to continue evaluating safety of the product under investigation.

"The complications are described in the instructions and are predictable", he said.

Many countries are vying for the coronavirus vaccine. The company started its trial on the same day as Pfizer, said on September 4.

"So it is critical we explore whether targetting the airways directly can provide an effective response compared to a vaccine injected into muscle".
