The latest deal comes on deadline day for members of the World Health Organization to join its COVAX scheme, which aims to buy COVID-19 vaccines and ensure immunisations are fairly and efficiently distributed. Bancel said he hoped preliminary results of the large-scale clinical trial would be available by October, but that a decline in the number of COVID-19 cases across the USA has slowed the timeline, the Globe reports.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on Monday, while announcing the country would climb down Covid-19 alert levels in the coming week, said Cabinet had agreed to signing a legally binding agreement to buy any vaccine to emerge from the COVAX facility.

Experts estimate that at least 70% of roughly 330 million Americans would need to be immune through a vaccine or prior infection to achieve what is known as herd immunity, which occurs when enough people are immune to prevent the spread of the virus to those unable to get a vaccine.

In August, the Commission paid AstraZeneca €336 million to secure under these conditions 300 million doses of its vaccine under development with an option to buy other 100 million shots.

Drugmakers have been more ambitious with their calculations.

Malaysia will be joining 172 countries to participate in the COVID-19 vaccine global access (COVAX) to obtain access to the supply of COVID-19 vaccine, said the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI).

"Nasabi natin yung mga need natin na matanggap na (we were able to tell them what we need) so we can already start with the process of regulation and start the clinical trial the soonest time possible", Vergeire said. About 18,000 people worldwide have received AstraZeneca's vaccine so far.

The undersecretary said the meeting with the Russian Embassy "went well". "One of the major factors will be a vaccine".

AstraZeneca revealed details of its large coronavirus vaccine trials Saturday, the third in a wave of rare disclosures by drug companies under pressure to be more transparent about how they are testing products that are the world's best hope for ending the pandemic. Moderna says it could have similar evidence in November. The U.S. Department of Defense and the CDC plan to start distribution of vaccines within 24 hours of regulatory authorization.

The two companies are scaling up manufacturing to be ready to produce up to one billion doses per year.

Dr Rahman said that it usually takes two to three months for the completion of a vaccine's clinical trials.
