Leaders of the Republican majority in the Senate, which is tasked with confirming court nominees, said they had enough support to hold a vote on the nomination either before the election or at worst during the "lame-duck" session between November 3 and the inauguration of the next president in January.

"The ballots are a disaster", Trump said.

The Trump campaign is challenging several states in court over their expanded mail-in ballot efforts.

The progressive justice, who died last week, will lie in repose at the court on Wednesday and Thursday, when the White House says Trump will visit to pay his respects. Millions of Americans, including much of the military, have cast absentee ballots by mail for years without problems. "You need that", Trump told reporters Tuesday, as he went on to stoke baseless claims that the election will be rife with fraud.

Mitt Romney, a rare Trump critic among Republican senators, said on Twitter: "Fundamental to democracy is the peaceful transition of power; without that, there is Belarus".

The poll showed that Florida voters trusted Biden and Trump equally to handle the coronavirus pandemic, but gave the president a 51% to 41% edge in managing the economy even amid the current downturn.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg lies in repose at Supreme Court
Republicans say that with their current control of the White House and the Senate, they have the right to fill the seat. "This scam that the Democrats are pulling - it's a scam - the scam will be before the United States Supreme Court".

"I think this will end up in the Supreme Court and I think it's very important to have nine justices", Mr. Trump said at the White House.

In order to prevent a four-four split on a potential election-related issue, Trump suggested during a roundtable event that lawmakers should take swift action on his candidate, who is expected to be announced on Saturday.

Since her death Friday evening, people have been leaving flowers, notes, placards and all manner of Ginsburg paraphernalia outside the court in tribute to the woman who became known in her final years as the "Notorious RBG".

A Senate confirmation vote before the election would seal a 6-3 conservative majority on the court, potentially spelling trouble for Democrats should it be called on to decide any legal dispute over the results of the election. And I think having a 4-4 situation is not a good situation.

Some Florida Republicans have pushed for Trump to choose Barbara Lagoa, a Cuban-American judge on the Atlanta-based 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, to replace Ginsburg, believing the move would bolster his prospects in the state. Supreme Court appointments, which are to lifetime posts, require Senate confirmation. In 2016, McConnell refused to hold confirmation hearings for President Obama's pick to replace Justice Antonin Scalia, who died almost nine months before the election.
