President Xi Jinping's pledge that China will achieve carbon neutrality before 2060 is the most significant climate policy move for years and, if achieved, could curb likely global warming by 0.2-0.3 Celsius this century, researchers said.

"All actors - governments, cities and companies, NGOs and global organizations - need to have their own transition plans to net-zero before 2050", said the Secretary-General.

The challenge of achieving carbon neutrality by 2060 is huge.

The United Nations and Britain have announced that they would co-host a global climate summit on December 12, the fifth anniversary of the landmark Paris Agreement.

The UN has billed the event as "a vital moment to mobilise greater action and ambition" and "when governments are expected to present ambitious and quality climate plans" with all signatories of the Paris deal invited to take part.

Global leaders on Thursday presented bold and urgent demands at the Climate Ambition Roundtable convened by SGuterres, capping a week of major announcements, including from China, the European Union and many global businesses, that signal the tide is turning for climate action.

The Secretary-General's Special Envoy on Climate Finance Mark Carney said of the private finance: "It's not just moving, it's moving fast". We are at a tipping point. "That can help us achieve our goals".

And Canada has made climate risk disclosure a condition for major firms to access COVID-19 recovery funds, Carney noted.

However a host of climate policy announcements have been delayed as the government grapples with a resurgence of Covid-19 cases.

The UK government has previously said its updated national contribution to the Paris Agreement would be informed by recommendations from its official climate advisors, the Committee on Climate Change, which is due to publish advice on 9 December.
